    My spouse and I are adding a variety of stocks/ETF to my present holdings for the long term, We've set aside $250k to start following inflation-indexed bonds and stocks of companies with solid cash flows, I believe it is a good time to capitalize on the market for long-term gains, but it wouldn't hurt to know means of actualizing short term profit.

      Buying a stock is easy, but buying the right stock without a time-tested strategy is incredibly hard. hence I will suggest you get yourself a financial-Advisor that can provide you with entry and exit points on best stocks to buy now or put on a watchlist. Apple, Merck, General Dynamics, Cheniere Energy and Marriott International are prime candidates.

      A lot of folks downplay the role of advlsors until being burnt by their own emotions. I remember couple summers back, after my lengthy divorce, I needed a good boost to help my business stay afloat, hence I researched for licensed advisors and came across someone of utmost qualifications. She's helped grow my reserve notwithstanding inflation, from $275k to $850k.

    I’d be retiring or working less in 10 years, and considering this financial recession, I’m curious to know best how people split their pay, how much of it goes into savings, spendings or investments, I earn around $250K per year but nothing to show for it yet.

      Very true, I find myself lucky enough exposed to money management at an early age. Worked full time when I was 19, purchased first home at 28, fast forward time... I'm 50 now, got laid off March 2020 amidst lockdown, a blessing in disguise. At once, I consulted an advisor to stay afloat and with subsequent investments, I'm only 15% short of $1m as of today.

    Retirees who struggle to meet their basic needs are the ones who could not accumulate enough money during their active years to meet their needs. Retirement choices determine a lot of things. My parents both spent same number of years in the civil service, but my mom was investing through an asset manager, and my dad through the 401k. My mom retired with about 4.2 million, but my dad retired with roughly 1.8 million.

      `This is so true. I'm in my mid 40's now. My wife and I were following this same trajectory. Last two years, I pulled out my money and invested with her wealth manager. Not catching up with her profits over the years, but at least I earn more. I'm making money even before retiring, and my retirement fund has grown way more than it would have with just the 401(k). Haha.

    Considering the increased complexity since the 2008 crash and COVID, I suggest diversifying your financial portfolio. I hired a manager and successfully grew my assets by over ($150K) during this turbulent market using defensive strategies that protect and profit from market fluctuations.

      It's recommended that. you save at least 20% of your income in a 401k. You can use online calculators to estimate how much you should save based on your age and income. Saving at least 20% of your income in a 401(k) can help ensure that you have enough money to retire comfortably. By saving this much, you can take advantage of investing in the stock market and potentially grow your retirement savings over time.

      I'll tell you that it's practically hard to rebuild your retirement on your own, without a partner's assistance. Not even NewRetirement and associates can match the skills, experience, and broad clientele of a professional financial advisor. Assess and select one, and then use a financial advisor to help you allocate your funds.

      As a contractor, my job leaves me little time to thoroughly analyze my investments or evaluate stocks myself. Therefore, for the past seven years, I've entrusted a fiduciary to actively manage and adjust my portfolio to align with current market conditions. This approach has helped me navigate the ups and downs, knowing when to buy and sell. Perhaps you should consider a similar strategy.

    I am sorry but why do you and so many "advisors" use examples of people who earn and invest vast amounts of money. The majority of people in the UK will never see these incomes or these chances of investment :o( ........ According to the ONS, the median average UK pension pot is £32,700, yet this varies significantly depending on age and pension type. For 25-34 year olds, it's £9,300, but for 55-64 year olds it rises to £107,300.1 Apr 2024

    Great video. Many of us have 1 or 2 DB pensions as well as DC pensions, which adds yetmore variation. Im currently thinking of postponing DB start and usung DC first, partly for tax and partly for growth teasons. DB have done relatively well during high inflation/low growth times.

    For Neil, he could defer taking his State Pension for the years between 67 and 69. There are two immediate advantages. Firstly, it would lower his total annual income and would save him Income Tax at 40% (as far as I can tell from the graph). Then, when he does take his State Pension, it would be a higher pension for life! After one year of deferral, his pension would be 5,8% higher; so he would get two loads of this. So long as he lives another 17 years, he will break even. This must surely make his tax efficiency better.

    If you are acting as a financial adviser and are looking to help people make a once and for all decision regarding the next 30 years, then James is right. But most of us on here are more active than that. I will be holding a larger proportion of cash than usual for perhaps 12-18 months. When a buying opportunity comes around, then Vanguard / Blackrock will be receiving some money for the longer term.

    James This is really interesting analysis and advice. I had a question on the strategy at 11 minutes plus in the video. Given the strategy is to keep the tax rate down why would Lois not take the 4% income from her Isa which is tax free thereby reducing the amount of capital she needs to take from her investment account by £12k? For me it surely makes sense to preserve capital as much as possible. I would be particularly interested to see if it made more sense for her to take the 4% income from every bucket in the first year, thus retaining the capital element as much as possible, and I would look to move the capital from the investment account to the ISA account over the next 5 years by utilising her ISA allowances. In this way she would increase her tax free income over the next 5 years and the longer term gain from that would surely negate the slightly higher taxes in years 1- 4? What do you think about this strategy? Finally I also think that Lois could find a much better yield than 4% and at the moment Higher Yield Bond funds are paying out over 7% (and given interest rates are likely to fall from their current lofty highs the capital returns are likely to be positive) and some enhanced dividend funds are paying out over 6%.

Spend it use it .If a labour Government gets in they have a plan to grab more from you .I know.

    The average life expectancy in the UK is around 80 years. Will it be really worth putting extra into a pension? Ideally one would want to get a good return for..money invested or salary sacrificed. Therefor on average a person would have to live past 86/90 years before it starts to be beneficial...

    Surely the answer is to change investment strategy as you go along, ie take a riskier approach early on to built up a larger pot and then as you get older move to less riskier investments to avoid downturns. Also, in the uk you get a £10k pa state pension from 67 so is this built into the model?

    I think you may have made a mistake. Certainly, if you hold more money in premium bonds, then your average percentage per year will increase. Equally, if you hold a smaller amount, but for longer, as in your example of 10 years, then your average percentage will again increase. If you held even just £1 you could get the higher 3.5% average if you held it for an indefinitely long time.

    Hi James, excellent videos. I started investing really late (early 50s) - which is bewildering for a Taurean. However, just to give some idea as to how compound interest is working for me ... I invest £800 per month and actually really enjoy checking the progress of those investments. Over the last 5 months alone I have invested £4k. However, they have returned £9k in just those 5 months. As my pot increases the next 5 months will see a dramatic increase on the £9k compared to the last 5 months. So my message to everyone is keep going and keep watching the videos from James because it's all educational and it's all a positive. Don't get disillusioned or demoralised by those goody two shoes who had the privilege of sound advice when younger. The vast vast majority of people in the country haven't got a pot to piss in so the fact that you're setting money aside to buy a pot to piss in should be worth a good back pat for yourselves. Keep going.

    I am just 65 and planning my retirement now. Looked at annuity but to get it index linked in some way is very expensive. So many variables. I have state pension next year and two small DB schemes which will give me in total about £25k per year and then £400k cash. And £600k in drawdown. But at one stage I thought the annuity was a good option but the inflation element could destroy it.

    • @JamesShack
      @JamesShack 4 дня назад

      It's expensive because it is a big risk. Take the last three years as an example, if you did not have indexation, you would have lost 20% of your purchasing power.

    • @johnrichards4097
      @johnrichards4097 4 дня назад

      @@JamesShackprecisely. But also imagine if you had not taken out inflation linking. So in periods of low inflation annuities are not attractive because interest are low. But they are safer. In periods of high inflation annuities get good rates but inflation linking costs. It’s a gamble to take out an annuity on a good rate with no inflation linking hoping that inflation doesn’t go up much. I am surprised so many people have opted for this. But preference of bonds has hurt me. So it’s a mess. Thanks Liz Truss.
